Lifting this canvas off the floor, I feel the heaviness of the numerous paint layers under what can be seen. I enjoyed all my visions, but knew every time I put my brush down for the day, I wasn't quite happy, it needed something more. Going to bed last night, I was pretty happy, but I knew I wanted to brighten up the shadows under the trees, I knew a blue-purple was what was needed. This morning, after my first cup of coffee, that was exactly what I did. But then I saw other things, things that become more dull because of the vibrancy of the blue-purple. And, I decided to play. How liberating. I gave myself permission to just play. I put my reference photo away, pulled out my colour wheel and really studied my canvas. The majority of yesterdays painting is still visible, it's simply a happier painting. And that makes me smile.
Tonight is opening night of my solo show at the Krempp Gallery in Jasper, Indiana. Along with 34 other recent works, "Km 2850 Pond" and "Km 2400 Summer Colours" will be on display for the next month at the Jasper Community Arts Center. Take a look at my personal website - carolloeb.weebly.com - for more pictures from the exhibition over the next few days....
.All the font work was done by hand, using a pencil, before being gone over with ink. Then the easy part - the painting. There really are cart ruts at the plaque, left behind by those families that travelled to find their future. Maybe I love this piece so much, or the idea of this piece, because, like them, I drove my more modern version of a wagon (my Matrix) to Saskatoon from Nova Scotia and passed by a few hundred feet from where these people before me travelled.
I wonder if the Trans Canada parallels the wagon trails. Does anyone know? |
